Summer Reading

We are pleased to present the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Summer Reading Program for Grand Avenue Middle School. Summer should be filled with joyful times, and we hope that reading will be an important part of your child’s summer plans.
A large body of research indicates that students have higher perceptions of themselves as readers when they have some choice in their reading selections. Therefore, the Department of English at Grand Avenue Middle School invites each child to choose a personally interesting title to read this summer. We recommend that the selected text be of appropriate length and complexity (ie: a text written for teens or young adults). We are also pleased to provide some resources for any child who might need help making a selection. While the books suggested through these resources have literary merit, some may be suitable for more mature students. We urge you, therefore, to carefully review these resources to help your child make an appropriate selection based upon personal interests, reading level, and maturity.
To assist students as they make their selections, we have provided links to these resources here for your convenience. We encourage students who are having difficulty finding a book to reach out the YA librarian at your local public library. Summer reading is optional, but highly recommended!
